ANTHONY HOPKINS - HOPKINS: LECTER ALLOWED HIM TO QUIT THE STAGE

While many renowned actors think of the theater as the only legitimate performance medium, Anthony Hopkins apparently is happy to put the stage behind him. In an interview with today's Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Hopkins says that the movie Silence of the Lambs "saved my life." Hopkins said that although he had made a few movies prior to playing Hannibal Lecter in that film, "none was successful enough to rescue me from the theater. I was trapped. You see, I'm a philistine at heart. The idea of spending the rest of my life on the boards doing Shakespeare was enough to make me want to cut my throat."
