RADIOHEAD - GLASTONBURY 'NOT GREEN ENOUGH' FOR RADIOHEAD'S THOM YORKE
Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has ruled his band out of this year's Glastonbury festival because of concerns over the event's carbon footprint.
Yorke, who fronts Friends of the Earth's Big Ask climate change campaign, said the festival's poor public transport links meant he would be a hypocrite if he performed.
Writing in the Sun, the 39-year-old said concertgoers were travelling to Radiohead gigs "one or two people in a car", something he dubbed an "ecological disaster".
"What we're trying to do now is only play in areas that have a public transport infrastructure in place," he continued.
"So that rules out Glastonbury for this year. Maybe we can work out a plan for the future. They're probably sick of the sight of us anyway."
Yesterday Yorke was in Brussels to urge EU politicians to commit to carbon emission cuts by 2020.
The singer admitted the lobbying had left him "really nervous" and he hardly slept as a result.
"It's not like playing a gig - that's just normal," he added. "This is a really big deal."
This year's Glastonbury will be headlined by Jay-Z, the Verve and Kings of Leon, while Hot Chip, British Sea Power and Leonard Cohen will also be performing.
More than 150,000 people are expected to attend the three-day festival in June.
