BABYSHAMBLES - DOHERTY COMMISSIONS CROSS SCULPTURE
BABYSHAMBLES rocker PETE DOHERTY has commissioned a sculpture of himself on a cross for a forthcoming solo concert in London.
The disturbing artwork will be carved in marble and show Doherty being tortured, surrounded by strips of tabloid newspapers - symbolising his 'crucification' by the press.
The star is working with his friend, artist Nick Reynolds to sculpt the piece and Doherty spent an entire day having casts of his body made for the figure.
Reynolds insists he came up with the idea a long time ago and it has taken three years to come to fruition.
He tells WENN, "I was quite pally with (late rocker) Michael Hutchence and Paula Yates and their love affair - like Pete and Kate (Moss)' - went a bit sour. The negative press put a downward spiral on them.
"And when I saw the press that Pete was getting, it made me think of them - I saw the same pattern. As if Pete was being crucified by the press. That's when I came up with the idea for the statue."
If the artwork is finished in time, it will appear on stage alongside Doherty's at his Royal Albert Hall concert on 12 July (08).
