Former BLINK 182 star TOM DeLONGE has defended MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE against the media backlash they've faced over their dark, moody music, insisting there's nothing unusual about their songs' lyrical content.
The rockers have come under fire from critics all over the world, but remarks made about the group in Britain's Daily Mail led to fans protesting outside the newspaper's offices earlier this month (Jun08).
Mail reporters suggested there was a link between the suicide of English schoolgirl Hannah Bond last year (07) and her love of `emo' music, like that of the Teenagers hitmakers.
But DeLonge sympathises with My Chemical Romance, because the members of Blink 182 went through the same controversy when their music was linked to the suicide of one student, who was a victim of the Columbine shootings in 1999.
He says, "The same sort of thing happened to me with Blink, so I can understand what it's like to be a part of something like that.
"We had a victim of the Columbine shootings take his life with our song on repeat. You kinda go through these situations where you blame yourself, but you can't.
"You have no idea who these people are. And My Chemical Romance, they spend a lot of time singing about coming together. There's ingredients of rebellion and angst, but what band doesn't have that when you're young?"
