CRUZ STILL HAUNTED BY DESPERATE DAYS AT THE SUNSET MARQUIS
PENELOPE CRUZ hates revisiting Los Angeles hang-out the Sunset Marquis because the hotel reminds her of the dark days of her first trip to Hollywood.
The Spanish actress stayed there with two stray cat pets while she was shooting her first English-language film The Hi-Lo Country and admits she was lonely and miserable.
Still trying to master English, the Vanilla Sky star admits she found it tough to make friends.
She tells W magazine, "Many times I would pick up the phone and realise there was no one to call because I didn't have any friends."
The experience means a trip back to the Sunset Marquis to meet friends or directors is never one she enjoys.
She explains, "I cannot even look at those rooms now. I have a weird physical reaction. Everything comes back from those years."
