Canadian director DAVID CRONENBERG is bringing his 1986 movie THE FLY to the opera - he's adapting the sci-fi drama for the stage. The A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE film-maker is reuniting with his costume designer sister DENISE and composer HOWARD SHORE, who both worked on the JEFF GOLDBLUM-starring movie. Spanish tenor PLACIDO DOMINGO will conduct the opera version of The Fly, which will be co-produced by the Los Angeles Opera and Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. The plan to convert the movie into opera format has long been a dream for Cronenberg, who declared in a 1993 interview, "You could actually write an opera based on The Fly. It could be sort of a one-set thing, very inexpensive." The opera is scheduled to open in Paris in July 2008, moving on to Los Angeles in September that year. Domingo enthuses, "It has long been my dream to unite the worlds of film with those opera, especially in Los Angeles... I have heard many of Howard Shore's scores for films such as THE LORD OF THE RINGS and, of course, THE FLY, and knew that here was musician who should write an opera."
