Daniel Craig has scooped his first award for his portrayal of James Bond in Casino Royale after being named best actor by the London Evening Standard.

Craig, who made his debut as 007 in the film, was honoured for his performance as part of the Evening Standard British Film Awards held at The Ivy.

The gong comes hot on the heels of a Bafta nomination for the 38-year-old who impressed audiences and critics with his take on the iconic role.

Co-star Judi Dench was another winner at the awards, picking up Best Actress, although the award was for the film Notes on a Scandal rather than her role as 'M'.

United 93, which details the last moments of one of the planes hijacked on September 11th, picked up Best Film.

Featuring a cast of relative unknowns, the film has been widely praised for its moving depiction of the infamous flight, which ended in a field in Pennsylvania after a terrorist plot was averted.

Sacha Baron Cohen picked up his latest award for the worldwide smash Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, picking up the Peter Sellers award for best comedy.
