FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA - COPPOLA: 'I WAS THE BLACK SHEEP'

Director FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA's family was stunned he became a big star, because he grew up an ugly, untalented "black sheep". Coppola boasts a glittering back catalogue of movies, including the Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now - and has won an astonishing five Academy Awards. But he claims his success astonished his parents and siblings, who expected him to end up unmarried, jobless and penniless. He says, "Oddly enough, I was the black sheep of the family. I was not the bright student, I was not the handsome brother, I was not anything. I was like the jerk of the family, and it was mysterious how I should become so successful."
