CANNES WINNING ACTRESS TURNED DOWN ROLE FIRST

Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Award winner JEON DO-YEON initially turned down the role that won her the prestigious prize, because she didn't understand the character. The South Korean actress landed the award for her role in Secret Sunshine, playing a widow struggling to come to terms with the death of her husband. But the 34-year-old confesses she almost missed out on the career-making achievement. She says, "I turned down the offer at first because I could not understand from just reading the script the feelings and circumstances that (lead character) Shin-ae experiences. "When I read the script again after that, I could feel Shin-ae's pain that I couldn't before. I wanted to experience it and know what would be the end of the pain."
