NAOMI CAMPBELL - CAMPBELL SHOCKED BY AMBASSADOR ROLE

LATEST: Supermodel NAOMI CAMPBELL has spoken of her shock at being appointed an ambassador for Rio de Janeiro earlier this week (begs22JAN07) but vows she'll devote herself to charity work in the city. The star had no idea she was about to receive the honour when she arrived in Brazil for a committee meeting for gala entertainment extravaganza Fashion Rocks, to be held in the country's capital in April (07). But despite her surprise, Campbell is adamant she'll do justice to the job. She tells the New York Daily News, "I didn't know I was going to be made an ambassador for Rio at all. I was totally shocked when the mayor did offer that. "I do have a charity there, 'We Love Brazil.' It's to help people in the favelas (ghettos). The women make crocheted fabrics, and designers from Brazil use them. "It's been raining in Brazil for 26 days and hundreds of people have lost their houses. The charity gives to people who don't have anything." Rio de Janeiro Mayor CESAR MAIA spoke out in support of the city's new ambassador, saying, "She has an image that is the face of Rio de Janeiro, she could represent it abroad like nobody else."
