ASTIN: 'GOONIES SEQUEL A DEAD CERT'
A sequel to 1980s cult kids movie THE GOONIES is "almost certain to happen", according to star SEAN ASTIN.
Plans for a follow-up have been afoot for the past decade, with speculation Warners Bros. hoped to turn it into an animated movie.
But Astin - who played Mikey in the Richard Donner-directed hit - is convinced studio Warner Bros. will cast him and the original cast in an update of the adventure film.
Astin tells MTV, "The writing's on the wall when they're releasing the Goonies DVD in such numbers."
He and co-star Corey Feldman share the view that a sequel should focus on the children of their characters: "I have three children and Corey's got a kid now. So as we now all have kids who are coming into the age that we were when we made the movie, it's more likely to me that they'll figure out how to design a story that will satisfy the older audience in terms of connecting with the original 1985 Goonies, and then create this new thing."
