ARCTIC MONKEYS - ARCTIC MONKEYS TAKE THREE PRIZES AT 2008 NME AWARDS

Arctic Monkeys have claimed three prizes at the 2008 NME awards including the best British band prize.

The Sheffield indie kids also claimed the best track award for their fan favourite Fluorescent Adolescent while the video for Teddy Picker - directed by Roman Coppola - beat competition from Justice, Bloc Party and Klaxons to win the best video trophy.

The Arctics missed out on the best album award however, with Klaxons' Myths of the Near Future following its Mercury Prize success with a gong at Thursday night's ceremony at London's O2 Arena.

Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding was able to make two acceptance speeches after claiming the best TV show and the best dressed awards, but Amy Winehouse was unable to repeat her Grammy success on home shores, losing out in the best solo artist category to Kate Nash and being named the worst dressed star of the year.

The Reading and Leeds festivals were named event of the year for the second consecutive time while the new Wembley Stadium - which hosted the Live 8 and Diana memorial concerts as well as huge shows from Muse and Metallica - was named best venue.

Controversial Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty was named hero of the year while US president George Bush took the villain's prize.

The Hoosiers were named worst band in a category otherwise dominated by emo acts and Britney Spears' Blackout won the worst album award.

The awards featured performances from Klaxons, Lightspeed Champion, Kate Nash, the Cribs - with former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr - and Gallows featuring Lethal Bizzle.
