Amazon on Thursday launched a beta version of its new Amazon Video on Demand service, which allows users to watch any of 40,000 movies and TV shows on their PCs or Macs. (It requires no special software.) The videos are available for "rent" only, i.e. via streaming video and therefore cannot be watched in places where Internet access is not available, like planes. Unlike most other video services, there are no subscription charges connected with the Amazon service. Each film or movie carries its own rental fee. All of the major studios except Disney have agreed to provide video to the service, as have all of the major broadcast networks except Disney-owned ABC.
