Zombie's Carnival Past
Heavy rocker-turned-horror film guru ROB ZOMBIE was destined to be a carnival worker until his parents decided the travelling life was too dangerous for the family. Zombie's folks quit the circus lifestyle in the 1970s after a gang of angry gamblers set their carnival's tents on fire after they were cheated in a sideshow ruse. The rocker still recalls the terrible night: "Everybody's pulling out guns, and you could hear guns going off. "I remember this one guy we knew, he was telling us where to go, and some guy just ran up to him and hit him in the face with a hammer - just busted his face wide open. "My parents packed up real quick, and we took off. I think at that moment, they were like, 'OK, new plan!'" But Zombie, real name ROBERT CUMMINGS, still has fond memories of growing up among carnival folk and he has included a photograph of his "carnie" grandfather in the artwork on his new album EDUCATED HORSES - a term for a circus animal attraction.
