X Factor Winner Reaches The Top

The winner of British TV talent contest THE X FACTOR has ended BAND AID 20's four-week reign atop the UK singles chart with a cover of PHIL COLLINS classic AGAINST ALL ODDS.

Proceeds from STEVE BROOKSTEIN's debut single are going to the victims of the Asian tsunami, and his record company manager SIMON COWELL - who starred in The X Factor alongside SHARON OSBOURNE - has praised his new recruit's generosity.

Cowell says, "The cost to Steve will be a few thousand but he didn't even think about it. He said, 'I want to do it.'"

Brookstein's Against All Odds entered the chart at number two last week (26DEC04), behind all-star Band Aid 20's re-working of 1984 hit DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS?.

The singer is one of three artists in the top four who are donating profits from their songs to charitable causes - Band Aid 20 proceeds are helping famine-stricken Africans, while money raised from sales of RONAN KEATING's cover of FATHER AND SON with YUSUF ISLAM is benefitting the Band Aid Trust.

In the albums chart, American rock group GREEN DAY jumped from 13 to one with AMERICAN IDIOT, knocking ROBBIE WILLIAMS' GREATEST HITS collection off the top.
