Williams, Keane, Ferdinand And Scissors Pick Up Early Brits

ROBBIE WILLIAMS, KEANE, FRANZ FERDINAND, MUSE and the SCISSOR SISTERS are among the first winners at tonight's (09FEB05) 25th annual BRIT AWARDS in London.

The star-studded ceremony, hosted by broadcasting millionaire CHRIS EVANS, started at 8pm (GMT) in the British capital's Earls Court 2 venue.

After New Yorkers Scissor Sisters opened the show with a performance of TAKE YOUR MAMA, Williams claimed the prestigious Brits 25 Best Song Award for his ballad ANGELS, which pitted him against classic songs from the past 25 years of the Brit awards.

Williams was shocked to be presented the trophy by British comedians DAVID WALLIAMS and MATT LUCAS, dressed as his former TAKE THAT bandmates GARY BARLOW and HOWARD DONALD.

Responding to Scissor Sisters frontman JAKE SHEARS' claims earlier this week (begs07FEB05) that Williams is gay, the singer joked, "I would just like to thank my boyfriend, Jake, from the Scissor Sisters."

Keane went on claim Best British Breakthrough Artist and Scots rockers Franz Ferdinand picked up Best British Rock Act.

Franz frontman ALEX KAPRANOS graciously accepted his gong, saying, "We've had a smashing time and we think it's time for someone else to have a go."

Other winners so far include Muse for Best British Live Act, Scissor Sisters for Best International Breakthrough Act, McFLY for Best Pop Act and original POP IDOL winner WILL YOUNG for Best British Single for YOUR GAME.

Nominees and performers at awards include GWEN STEFANI, JAMELIA, LEMAR and DANIEL and NATASHA BEDINGFIELD.

The awards continue.
