Weisz Shocked By Africa's Poverty
Screen star RACHEL WEISZ was horrified while filming THE CONSTANT GARDENER in the slums of Kibera, Kenya - because it was one of the most poverty-stricken areas the African crew had ever seen.
The British beauty was sobered by the lack of sanitation, electricity or running water in the region, and was amazed anyone could survive in the hostile conditions.
She says, "It's home to 800,000 people, a place where Aids has made orphans of thousands of children. It's a no-go area.
"White people don't go there, even the 70 Kenyans working on the crew had never been there.
"The director (Brazilian film maker FERNANDO MEIRELLES) said, 'Brazil is poor, but it is like Switzerland compared to Africa."
