Verhoeven Returns To Mutiny Movie
Dutch film-maker PAUL VERHOEVEN is resurrecting a historic epic he abandoned three years ago because of funding problems.
The BASIC INSTINCT director announced BATAVIA'S GRAVEYARD - about a 17th century mutiny off the coast of Australia - in 2002, but it was shelved when financing fell through.
Now he's ready to breathe life back into the project, with fresh money from the Dutch Film Fund.
Verhoeven - who is working with long-time collaborator GERARD SOETEMAN - tells Screen Daily, "It's a story in the direction of the Bounty but it's much more about the development of a fascistic regime.
"That story has always fascinated us. We said if we don't write it now, we will never make it."
