Although some analysts had forecast that Warner Bros.' V for Vendetta
would reinvigorate the box office and become the first big blockbuster of
2006, the movie took in just $25.6 million, even less than what studio
estimates had indicated on Sunday. Indeed the overall box office itself
produced dismal returns -- some 10 percent below those for the comparable
weekend a year ago. Most analysts blamed competition from "March Madness" --
TV's coverage of the NCAA basketball tournament. But Paramount's She's the
Man, which was released to attract women with little interest in the
basketball tourney, produced absolutely dreary results, winding up in fourth
place with $10.7 million. Last week's box-office winner, Failure to
Launch, held up pretty well as it earned $15.6 million and slipped into
second place.
The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by
Exhibitor Relations (figures in parentheses represent total gross to
date):
1. V for Vendetta, Warner Bros., $25,642,640, (New); 2.
Failure to Launch, Paramount, $15,604,892, 2 Wks. ($48,273,823); 3. The
Shaggy Dog, Disney, $13,377,363, 2 Wks. ($35,635,419); 4. She's the
Man, Paramount, $10,730,372, (New); 5. The Hills Have Eyes, Fox
Searchlight, $8,008,822, 2 Wks. ($28,741,291); 6. 16 Blocks, Warner
Bros., $4,755,012, 3 Wks. ($30,190,041); 7. Eight Below, Disney,
$4,084,276, 5 Wks. ($73,040,379); 8. Tyler Perry's Madea's Family
Reunion, Lionsgate, $2,933,815, 4 Wks. ($60,029,631); 9. The Pink
Panther, Sony, $2,464,468, 6 Wks. ($78,575,414); 10. Aquamarine,

| St. Patty's day and march madness have nothing to do with the loss of moviegoers...after all both come every year...so every year they would impact movie going...duh...bunch of rocket scientists. The real issue is exactly what everybody knows it to be...nobody is interested in thegoing to the movies to be preached to...it is suppose to be escapism, not liberalism 101. George Clooney himself so much as stated he fully intends to continue to put out his ideological propaganda, full well knowing it isnt what the market wants. Hollywood and the media are the only two businesses in America that are hell bent on failure. demographics and customer needs are completely ignored and the they are paying the price. Liberals in these industries better wake up..or there wont be an industry. By the way liberals want you to believe that 20-25% of America is gay. Its more like 2-4% making movies geared to that demographic will yeild very little return on investment...it is way too funny that liberals who fancy themselvethey are this stupid. | ||

| I gave V a 5 out of 10. I am getting so sick and tired of politically motivated movies. I also have one suggestion to help Hollywood at the box office. As long as a medium popcorn costs $6.00 and a large soda $4.75, people are going to stay home. I would rather go down to the dollar store and get three times the munchies for half the price and be able to lay on my couch. I don't think the box office slump is due to poor movies. If the snacks and tickets were more reasonably priced I know I would go to the movies more often. The problem is people don't want to be paying the kind of money you have to pay to see a movie and then have the movie suck. If the prices were cheaper I would take more risks in the movies I see at the box office. Usually I wait for the film to be released on DVD, that we if it sucks I can just turn it off. | ||

| Just another in a line of what Hwood wants US to think instead of entertainment - they must also think we're all underinformed and gullible. To see approximately how many actual people went to see a movie - instead of the big dollars they always flaunt at US - divide the gross by $9. So V's big opening weekend had just 2.8M people nationwide - over 3 days - or about 1% of US! Saturday, it's biggest day, averaged just 343 people per screen all day! Released on 3,365 screens, for the Fri/Sat/Sun weekend that breaks down to about 56 people per show (5/day?) per screen. A real blockbuster! At least per Hollywood advertising. | ||
