Troubled Stars Triumph At Soul Train Awards

Troubled R+B stars R KELLY, JANET JACKSON and B2K were given the respect of their peers at the SOUL TRAIN MUSIC AWARDS in Los Angeles on Saturday (20MAR04), with all three picking up honours.

Kelly, who is currently on trial in Chicago, Illinois, on child pornography charges, picked up two awards at the 18th annual ceremony, while Jackson was given a boost after her breast-baring SUPER BOWL controversy with a Career Achievement gong.

Recently split B2K took home one of the Album of The Year awards.

However, rappers OUTKAST proved their new dominance in the field - the Atlanta, Georgia, duo picked up their first three Soul Train awards, including Best Music Video for HEY YA! and Album of The Year for SPEAKERBOXXX/THE LOVE BELOW.

The duo used their acceptance speeches to urge young fans to vote, with BIG BOI stating, "This is the year to vote. If you don't like what's going on in the country, now's the time to vote."

Outkast also kicked off the ceremony with a live performance.

Other performers included USHER, MICHELLE WILLIAMS and Kelly, who earned a standing ovation as he wandered among the audience while singing religious tune YOU SAVED ME with a full choir.

The ceremony was hosted by KENNETH 'BABYFACE' EDMONDS and ALICIA KEYS, who also won the Best R+B/Soul Single award for her hit YOU DON'T KNOW MY NAME.
