Townshend: Tommy Made Roger
THE WHO guitarist PETE TOWNSHEND credits the band's rock opera TOMMY with immortalising frontman ROGER DALTREY as one of the 20th century's greatest singers.
The eclectic musician insists the movie alerted audiences to Daltrey's unique stage presence and put him in the same elite category of iconic stars.
He says, "It made Roger a singer, it made Roger an icon, it made Roger like JIM MORRISON.
"It gave him the right to grow his hair and wear the tassel jacket and swing his mic around instead of just posing and looking angry and, like, 'Don't f*** with me,' which isn't who he is by any means. But it gave him a vehicle, it gave him a part that he could play."11/03/2004 16:56
