Tony Favours The Boys

Pop icon biopic JERSEY BOYS and British school drama THE HISTORY BOYS have dominated last night's (11JUN06) Tony Awards in New York City, snatching Best Musical and Best Play respectively. The History Boys won six Tonys in total, with honours for actor RICHARD GRIFFITHS, director NICHOLAS HYTNER, featured actress FRANCES DE LA TOUR, and two technical prizes for the classroom set and lighting. JULIA ROBERTS, presenting one of six awards to the cast of British playwright ALAN BENNETT's education saga, insisted, "You are insanely talented people." Jersey Boys, which recalls pop greats FRANKIE VALLI AND THE FOUR SEASONS, also won Top Actor in a Musical for JOHN LLOYD YOUNG's Broadway debut, while CHRISTIAN HOFF won the Featured Actor prize. Former SEX AND THE CITY star CYNTHIA NIXON was named Best Performance By A Leading Actress In A Play for RABBIT HOLE. Despite an impressive 11 nominations, the musical adaptation of THE COLOR PURPLE - part-produced by its big screen star OPRAH WINFREY - only picked up a Best Actress gong. Aside from the impressive talents receiving awards, the Tonys were also graced with a steady stream of guest hosts and stars including Winfrey and Roberts, whose own critically-panned stage debut in THREE DAYS OF RAIN was not even nominated.
