The Shawshank Redemption Tops Movie Poll

The Shawshank Redemption has been voted the best movie never to win the Best Picture ACADEMY AWARD.

In a survey of 6,000 film experts conducted by British film guide the RADIO TIMES GUIDE TO FILMS 2005, the prison drama starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman beat off compETition from It's A Wonderful Life and ET: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL to land the top spot.

With the exception of 1994's The Shawshank Redemption, none of the movies in the top ten were made in the last ten years, while six were shot in or before the sixties.

The top ten is as follows:

3. ET: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL

4. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

5. The Great Escape

6. The Wizard of Oz

7. Some Like It Hot

8. The Color Purple

9. Raiders of the Lost Ark

10. Psycho.
