The Race To Be Robbie

A female ROBBIE WILLIAMS fan is leading the race to play the pop superstar in his new music video - and giving him the chance to prove a point about reality TV.

The MILLENNIUM hitmaker has launched a spoof talent show, allowing fans to vote for one of three contenders vying to star in the promo for his new single SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL.

Each finalist - whittled down from hundreds of contenders auditioned by a panel including Robbie's dad PETE CONWAY - performs as Robbie in a "cliffhanger video" currently being shown on music network MTV. The winner will appear alongside the star in a final version of the video, to be released on Monday (14JUL03).

And so far, contender REBECCA DURRANT is leagues ahead of her rivals PETER CARUANA and BJORN WENNER - according to the singer's official website she has scored a massive 68 per cent of votes.

Record company EMI's ERIC WINBOLT says, "The whole concept, reality gameshow spoof, interactive voting and changing the outcome of the video, complements Robbie Williams' personality. He is such a star of the people and this video allows fans to be part of the experience. Viewers have control, both of the eventual outcome and of access to additional footage exclusively in the interactive environment."

And the star himself insists there is a serious message about the dangers of reality shows.

Robbie explains, "I know TAKE THAT were a manufactured band but I think it's all gone too far nowadays. These shows - you know which ones I mean - promise fame and fortune but they just chew people up and spit them out. People don't realise how fleeting their moment of fame can be. In the end, they are being humiliated for mass entertainment."
