The Man Behind Otis Redding Dies At 66

24 April 2006
PHIL WALDEN, the record boss who discovered Otis Redding and The Allman Brothers, has lost his battle with cancer. He was 66. The Capricorn Records founder died at his home in Atlanta, Georgia, yesterday (23APR06). Walden made his mark when he championed Redding after the pair met as teenagers in MACon, Georgia in the 1950s. Walden was largely responsible for the soul legend's success. His life was marred by two well-publicised tragedies - the plane crash death of Redding in 1967 and DUANE ALLMAN's fatal motorbike accident in 1971. In paying his respects today (24APR06), former Allman Brothers keyboard player CHUCK LEAVELL says, "Phil was a visionary... He had a deep passion for the music."
