The Clash: We Were Friends With The Sex Pistols
Punk legends THE CLASH enjoyed a healthy rivalry with the SEX PISTOLS, although the feud was exaggerated by the British media.
As the hype surrounding the punk explosion in the late seventies grew, British newspapers were quick to build up a rivalry between the two bands, but the SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO hellraisers insisted they did not take it seriously.
PAUL SIMONON recalls, "It was only ever playful rivalry, you know. It was just built up by the press."
But MICK JONES admits that the SEX PISTOLS resented them, adding "Granted, they did seem to get pissed off the bigger we got. Maybe they saw us as competition, a competition that, I suppose, we eventually won, although we never really thought of it that way."06/10/2004 03:19
