Takei's Fan Mail Increased After Coming Out
STAR TREK actor GEORGE TAKEI's fan mail rocketed after he revealed he is gay in 2005 - after keeping his relationship with partner BRAD ALTMAN a secret for 18 years. The Japanese-American star, who played MR SULU in the original Star Trek series from 1966 to 1969, decided to take a stand and publicise his relationship after a bill allowing same-sex marriages was vetoed in his home state California. He says, "I'm receiving thousands (of fan letters) - too many to read. "I've been with Brad for 18 years and although we'd been out to friends and family for years, I'd never spoken publicly about that part of my life. "The event which caused me to speak out was when the governor of California, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, vetoed a bill legalising same-sex marriages. I knew it was time I said something. "Brad and I have talked about marriage, but I want it to be where my life is - here in California."
