Studios Thought Caine's Harry Palmer Was Gay
Movie bosses tried to axe SIR MICHAEL CAINE's iconic HARRY PALMER character from 1965 spy movie THE IPCRESS FILE, because they thought he looked too gay.
Studio chiefs were concerned because spy Palmer wore glasses and cooked for himself.
Caine explains, "The studio said, 'Everyone is gonna say he's a fag! I mean, cooking? JOHN WAYNE wouldn't cook anything for anybody. It looks like a faggot cooking.
"They said, 'Is he short-sighted?' We said, No, it's a part of the character.' They said, 'There's never been a leading man since HAROLD LLOYD who wore glasses, and he's a comedian."
