Stone Sad About Movie Censorship

SHARON STONE is frustrated steamy new movie BASIC INSTINCT 2 was butchered by film censors, because her favourite sexy scenes were cut. She was most disappointed about one particular shot, in which she indulges in a threesome with an unnamed French actress. Stone, 48, says, "We shot this amazing menage a trois scene and the girl was beautiful - really hot. However the ratings board made us take it out. "I guess it was too hot for them."

To use the word "censorship" in this context is a misnomer. The ratings board works for the MPAA, which is a private company started by Jack Valenti as both a way for the industry to present a standardized ratings system to the public, and an industry advocacy group. Here's how it works. The MPAA has a deal with almost all theater chains in the U.S. The deal is, in exchange for a clear and definitive ratings system, theater chains don't show any movie that doesn't have the MPAA stamp. So if you make your own movie, you can't show it anywhere without going through the MPAA, and paying them a lot of money. But, in the end, it's a voluntary system. When the MPAA says cut this, trim that, and we'll give you an "R" rating, the producers, the production company, the distributor, and the director to an extent, say "okay." It has almost nothing to do with the government. Only the government can "censor" the media. That's censorship. The producers are still free to say "no" to the MPAA, but it's tough to get anyone to show it, so for the money they agree. But, if the MPAA or the ratings system didn't exist, or if it was incredibly unreliable, the government would step in, at popular demand, just after the very first family complains that they went into a movie thinking it was a decent family film and it ended up bing a raunchy porn film. Believe it!
