Stipe Called Corbijn For Gahan Drug Help
REM star Michael Stipe was so shocked by the look of DEPECHE MODE singer Dave Gahan when he met him in a Los Angeles bar in 1996, he called pal Anton Corbijn (corr) and asked for help.
Celebrated rock photographer Corbijn, a long-time Depeche Mode collaborator, had no idea Gahan was on the verge of self-destruction when he got Stipe's worrying phonecall.
He recalls, "Michael said he'd just met Dave Gahan and that Dave was in a terrible state, and could I do anything about it."
But Corbijn's help came too late - Gahan clinically died from a drug overdose in May, 1996.
