Star.s Salary Myths

Reports of multi-million dollar salaries for A-lister's like JULIA ROBERTS and LEONARDO DI CAPRIO are nothing more than fanciful exaggerations.

Stars like Roberts, Di Caprio and ROAD TO PERDITION actor TOM HANKS are rumoured to pull in around $20,358,000 (GBP13,000,000) per film, but according to an American study this is grossly over the top.

Overheads, including payments to agents, business managers and publicists, all command a large percentage of the revenue - meaning the poor stars take home little more than $6,264,000 (GBP4,000,000) each.

The Normal Heart 4218963 Film Reviews

It's taken nearly 30 years to bring Larry Kramer's passionate, award-winning play to the screen, but this high-calibre production is a genuine stunner. Even if it was made for television, it carries the gut-punch of a great drama, adding a deeply personal perspective to recent Aids epidemic documentaries like How to Survive a Plague and We Were Here.

At the centre is the outspoken writer Ned (Mark Ruffalo), who has already ruffled feathers in the 1981 New York gay community with his rants against promiscuity. So when a close friend (Jonathan Groff) comes down with what has been labelled "gay cancer", he has a new cause to get angry about. He gathers his buddies including Bruce, Tommy and Mickey (Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons and Joe Mantello) to form an action group, working with Emma (Julia Roberts), a doctor who suspects that the disease is sexually transmitted. But the community isn't willing to give up its hard-fought sexual freedoms. And as Ned falls for Times journalist Felix (Matt Bomer), he becomes increasingly outraged that the government is doing nothing while thousands of people die.

Kramer's script is so intimate and raw that it brings the characters to vivid life, giving each of the actors a show-stopping scene of his or her own. Ruffalo's complex and remarkably transparent performance holds everything together beautifully. Ned's relationships and confrontations all pack a powerful punch, from the romantic scenes with Bomer's lively Felix to darker strain with his brother (Alfred Molina) or an all-out battle with a politician (Corey Stoll). And Roberts gets some pungent scenes of her own, most notably a fiery rant against a room full of callous congressmen.

Director Ryan Murphy (Glee, American Horror Story) also adds some clever touches that further deepen the themes and make them resonate today. And while there are refreshingly light moments along the way, it's the eloquent dialogue that adds real power to the story. Especially with bracing observations like Tommy's horrified question in the face of government inaction: "Why are they letting us die? They just don't like us." Or when Felix realises what being closeted has done to gay men through history: "Men do not naturally not love. They've learned not to."

Mark Ruffalo Speaks On The Challenges Of Starring In HBO's The Normal Heart 4214965 News

Last night (May 25) HBO viewers witnessed Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo take on his most challenging role to date, as a gay rights activist living in the early years of the aids epidemic of the 1980s. In The Normal Heart, Ruffalo stars alongside Matt Bomer and Julia Roberts as Ned Weeks, a man desperate to draw attention to the aids crisis which is plaguing the gay community.

The character is based on real life activist Larry Kramer, who also wrote the film’s script based on his 1985 play of the same name. In order to prepare himself to take on the challenging role, Ruffalo spent time with Kramer, hearing his story and reading his works as well as remembering his own feelings witnessing the AIDS crisis in the early 80s. “It felt like a pandemic. And I was young, so I was still idealistic, and it was jarring to see the inhumane response to it all,” he told the Sioux City Journal. “It didn’t compute. But Larry was right, I didn’t fully understand how deep it went.”

Indeed at their initial meeting, Ruffalo said Kramer ‘tested’ him, by asking if he’d read the author’s 1978 work Faggots. Ruffalo did read it, later, and said it helped him “understand where the gay culture was before, where it was after, how prophetic Larry was. He was already saying, ‘We are not the sex that we’re having!’’

Now, nearly 30 years after The Normal Heart was first staged, it is still as relevant and important as ever, even if the original activists achieved their goal of raising the awareness of the disease.

In 2012 Kramer set about writing the movie, adding new scenes to the point where the film has become vastly different from the original play. “The play was meant to get you out of your seat, to take you out of your ennui and drive you to action," said Ruffalo. “But a lot of time has passed, so it becomes something else. We don’t have to shake the audience out of apathy. What we do is deepen the picture, show what kind of journey we were on that led us to where we now find ourselves,” he explained.

Now The Normal Heart is “less about AIDS than it is about love,” said Ruffalo. “That’s what blasts through! That’s what carries them! That’s what saved them! It’s the grace. It’s so powerful. It’s so moving. Love in every sense of the word, every permutation.” A message that truly is still as important and powerful as ever.

Get ready to rub your hands together with glee and cackle at the daily abuse celebrities have to field via Twitter. We're pretty confident that we're not the only ones who use the Jimmy Kimmel Live comedy segment as a legal high and we certainly weren't disappointed by episode seven as even more irrationally irate Twitter users were named and shamed on the US late night entertainment show.

Watch the latest 'Celebrities Read Mean Tweets' from 'Jimmy Kimmel Live.'

The highlight of the whole clip comes when Dallas Buyers Club star Matthew McConaughey tries to make sense of an insult directed at him. "Matthew McConaughey is a d**k turd," he reads. "A d**k turd. What the f**k is a d**k turd?" he asked in a deadpan voice whilst the audience roll about laughing.

Julia Roberts

"There are people who think Julia Roberts is hot!?" reads said actress, before continuing "her gigantic mouth looks like it will devour an elephant in one bite." The August: Osage County star could hardly read the second half because she was laughing.

Another celeb to have a chuckle at one of the insults directed his way was The Dark Knight Rises star Gary Oldman, who reads out "Gary Oldman sucks and his accents are f**king annoying as s**t" before breaking into uncontrollable laughter.

Gary Oldham

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 actress Emma Stone wasn't exactly laughing at her mean tweet but seems to take the random piece of criticism within her stride as she reads "Emma Stone looks like she smells like cat p**s." Likewise, a glowering Ashton Kutcher had a similar reaction to "Ashton Kutcher needs to get hit by a bus. ASAP."

Those celebrities aren't all about posing, being paid to endorse products and dodging paps: turns out some like to do a little nice thing or two every now and again. True, Julia Roberts appearing on Ellen isn't going to sort out the mess in Ukraine but the August: Osage County star certainly made us laugh with a prank she played on the Oscars pizza delivery guy.

Don't remember him? Well at the Oscars this year, host Ellen Degeneres got the party started by ordering pizza from a real life takeaway to be delivered to her glamorous audience. Instead of worrying about the calories or their chiffon frocks, many of the stars munched away happily as Edgar Martirosyan and his team dished out a few margheritas.

The stunt went down as one of the biggest talking points of the night and Big Mama's and Papa's pizzeria owner Edgar became an instant Hollywood hero. Under the guise of promoting Edgar's new LA restaurant, Wood, Ellen invited the guy to be her guest at the end of her show and bring the audience a little taster of his now-famous pizza.

"What a coincidence that we would actually get a guy from Russia who grew up watching Pretty Woman - you were his favourite movie star of all time and he was serving pizza to you," marvelled Ellen to Roberts in the interview before Edgar arrived on set.

"He was so sweet and it was yummy," exclaimed the actress, adding "I think they should always have a snack break at the Oscars now." As the audience giggled, Julia slowly sneaked up on the delivery guy and asked if she could have some pizza. Edgar's reaction pretty much made our day - rather than going crazy, he simply looked stunned before hugging the actress and kissing her hand.

"It's nice to see you again. What a sweet reaction," Roberts told Martirosyan before a crowd of delivery people appeared to hand out pizza to the whole audience.

Julia Roberts: Half-Sister's Death Was "Heartbreaking" 4163352 News

Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts has spoken of the “heartbreaking” loss of her half-sister. Nancy Motes, 37, was discovered in a bathtub in a Los Angeles home on February 9, after apparently overdosing on drugs.

“There aren’t words to explain what any of us have been through in these last 20 days…It’s hour by hour some days, but you just keep looking ahead”, the actress told Wall Street Journal Magazine.

Roberts and her half-sister seem to have had a rocky relationship in the weeks leading up to Motes’ death.  Writing on Twitter about her famous sibling, Motes asked “Do you want to be a fan of someone so cruel”, adding “She’s not even that good of an actress.” She later tweeted, “Just so you all know ‘America’s Sweetheart’ is a B***h!!'  Motes, a production assistant on Glee, also claimed that the Eat, Pray, Love actress would tease her about her weight when they were children.

In her March 1 interview with the magazine, Roberts continued, “You don’t want anything bad to happen to anyone, but there are so many tragic, painful, inexplicable things in the world…But [as with] any situation of challenge and despair, we must find a way, as a family, It’s so hard to formulate a sentence about it outside the weepy huddle of my family.”

Julia Roberts Opens Up About The "Heartbreak" Over Half-Sister's Suicide 4162842 News

Julia Roberts has finally opened up about the death of her half-sister Nancy Motes.

The 46 year-old actress' family was hit with the tragic news that Nancy was found dead in the bathtub of her apartment on February 9th.

"It's just heart-breaking," an emotional Roberts told Wall Street Journal magazine.

The 37 year-old is suspected to have died from an apparent drug overdose.

Prior to passing away, Nancy posted several tweets that implied herself and Roberts were not on speaking terms, and referred back to her youth when the 'August: Osage County' actress allegedly made fun of her weight.

The interview, which was conducted on March 1st, was only weeks after Nancy's death and at that time Roberts expressed difficulty in processing the loss. "It's only been 20 days," Roberts told the magazine at the time.

"There aren't words to explain what any of us have been through in these last 20 days . It's hour by hour some days, but you just keep looking ahead."

"So my 'sister' said that with all her friends & fans she doesn't need anymore love. Just so you all know 'America's Sweetheart' is a B--H!!'" Nancy tweeted this January.

Later adding, "Do you want to be a fan of someone so cruel? She's not even that good of an actress. Happy you totally F-ed with me?"

In the magazine interview Roberts did not discuss the alleged suicide note her half-sister left, in which she slammed the Hollywood star.

The 'Notting Hill' actress only focused on the grief her family were experiencing.

Beauty fans commenting on Nyong'o and Lancôme's posts have been pleased with the company choosing a black woman to represent them as those with dark skin are considerably underrepresented in the beauty industry.

By signing this deal with Lancôme, Nyong'o joins the likes of such actresses as Isabella Rossellini, Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway, Julia Roberts and Uma Thurman. Models who have acted as spokeswomen for the company include Arlenis Sosa, Daria Werbowy and Rossellini's daughter, Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann.

She emphasised how she felt using actors as ambassadors is "significant because actors are not just faces, they are spirits that people enjoy and relate to more than in an aesthetic way," further adding "we have the privilege of standing for something other than just looks."

She continued by praising company for having a "range of produces for every woman." Nyong'o explained how she had delivered a speech on beauty shortly before attending the Oscars and thus it is an area which is evidently important to the Kenyan-Mexican actress. Nyong'o concluded by stating "hopefully it's a symbiotic relationship - that I benefit from being associated with them, and they benefit from being associated with me, as well."

Emma Watson dating Emma Watson doesn't date other famous people

Emma Watson isn’t the only celeb to be involved with another non-famous partner. Matt Damon and his wife Luciana Barroso have been happily married since 2005. The pair met in a bar while Damon was filming Stuck on You with Greg Kinnear and they now have four daughters. “I hit the jackpot with my wife”, Damon told The Guardian. Well, ain't that nice?

Reese Witherspoon married fellow actor Ryan Philippe after meeting him on the set of their movie Cruel Intentions in 1999. The pair married in 2011 and have a son together. Wetherspoon told Elle mag, “Jim said, ‘I’m gonna show you every day what a good partner is, what a good person is. I’m going to take care of you. I’m gonna do this so much that you’re gonna get used to it.” Wow, he sounds perfect, we may stop dating celebrities too.

Julia Roberts may have been filming The Mexican in 2001 with Brad Pitt, but it’s the cameraman who caught her eye. Unfortunately he was married and she was dating Benjamin Bratt, although that didn’t stop them. The couple married in 2002 and have three children, Roberts has since described husband Danny Moder as her “Prince Charming”.

Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston dated after her divorce from Brad Pitt, but it was real estate agent Kyla Weber that swept him off his feet. Vince and Kyla married in 2010, and every day he is thankful that he “met the best girl in the world.”

'The Normal Heart': Mark Ruffalo, Matt Bomer Show Their Love In HBO Romance 4104701 News

HBO are ready to present their brand new TV film, The Normal Heart, which will be making its way onto small screens in late May. Based on Larry Kramer's eighties-set play of the same name, the plot has been built upon by Glee's Ryan Murphy: "I worked with Larry on the script for three years. We broke it out to 40- to 45 percent new material, and it's pretty broken out from the play," he told THR.

Mark Ruffalo

Starring Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer in the lead roles, The Normal Heart is a love story framed by the horrors of the AIDS epidemic and America's sexual politics and gay attitudes at the time. The drama also stars Julia Roberts, Taylor Kitsch and Jim Parsons and follows gay activists and medical professionals in New York City as they try to unravel the AIDS crisis.

Ruffalo takes centre-stage as Ned Weeks, a gay activist and writer who fronts a prominent HIV advocacy group whilst trying to persuade his closeted lover Felix (Bomer) to come out as openly gay. Roberts plays Dr. Emma Brookner, who is also trying to get a city in denial to take note of the disease; we hear her telling a room of gay men that they'll all infect each other. Parsons portrays gay activist Tommy Boatwright, reprising his role from the 2011 Broadway revival.

The Tony-winning play looks to have translated well to the screen, retaining its emotionally taut sequences and feeling of despair: "I am trying to understand why nobody gives a s**t that we're dying!" we hear Ruffalo shout at the end of the trailer. We see Ned and Felix share in intimate moments as they try to seek solace in a world being turned upside down.

HBO has enjoyed success with its many television films, most notably last year's storming Liberace biopic, Behind The Candelabra. The Normal Heart will premiere on Sunday 25th May at 9pm/8c on HBO.
