Spielberg's Lonely Childhood

OSCAR-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg relishes surrounding himself with family and friends, because he endured a lonely childhood.

The Saving Private Ryan director had so few friends as a child he resorted to amusing himself by pulling faces in the mirror.

He admits, "I guess I didn't have a lot to do. When you wind up staring at yourself in the mirror trying to scare yourself with yourself, then you do not really have an active social life.

"I needed to go out and meet some girls, get some girlfriends, socialise.

"God, I was really a lonely kid. I didn't spend a lot of time with a lot of friends. I didn't have a lot of friends when I was growing up."
