Spielberg: 'I Thought Schindler's List Would Be A Flop'

Movie mogul Steven Spielberg feared his acclaimed Holocaust movie Schindler's List would "shame" the memories of the victims.

The director insists he had no idea his film about German businessman OSCAR SCHINDLER, who saved Jewish employees, would be such a hit while he was making it and he feared the worst.

He explains, "I was terrified that it was going to do the opposite of good. I thought perhaps it might bring shame to the memory of those who didn't survive the Holocaust - and even worse to those who did.

"I made the picture out of just pure wanting to get that story told. I thought it was important that at least my kids someday could see what happened."

Spielberg admits he has the same trepidation about his new film Munich.

Schindlers List is a MUST SEE film, if only but once. It, like The Passion of the Christ, could probably not be stomached too often too soon, but are superlatively special. What I don't understand is how Saving Private Ryan became so popular. If I were to count on one hand the top films that personally gripped and moved me, Schindler would be on that list. As for Private Ryan, I won't even take my shoes and socks off to bother to list it.
