Spielberg Eyes Mary Poppins Remake

Oscar-winning film-maker STEVEN SPIELBERG is planning to remake classic 1960s musical MARY POPPINS.

SIR RICHARD EYRE, the director of the London stage show of Mary Poppins, has been approached by Spielberg to helm a new version of the 1964 JULIE ANDREWS-starring movie.

Eyre says, "Spielberg wants to make a new film of Mary Poppins and we've talked about it a lot.

"It will be hard to outdo the original but kids love the story and I'm sure that the remake will be a real success."

As for the new version, I think it should be an inner city Mary Poppins with Beyonce and Eminem (with a guest appearance by Whitney Houston as the crack addict ex-nanny). It would be great...jumping thru graffiti paintings...taking the kids to outings at the pawn shop...Feed the bums...Supercaliquityourbitchin...Lets go pimp my ride...My point is: don't try to improve upon what is already perfect. If this happens, my perception of Spielberg will be forever changed. It will be all about $$$. Walt Disney must be rolling in his grave.

Dick Van Dyke is a great actor, either as the same character, with digital technology to age him back to see younger role, and maybe even use his older look too, like they did with the tron new movie, I like the idea of a new Mary Poppins movie, I grew up watching the disney one, or have dick van dyke guest star in the new movie too would be great. with todays techno. it would make a great remake, if they get people equal or better than the actors from the Disney Mary Poppins which was a great movie growing up watching on tv

Wow, now that's something to look forward to. If only he can recapture the mind he had for ET or American Tale. But harder still than capturing the light cinema tricks played lightly will be to catch a song and dance duo as talented as Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews. The visual magic is easy for Spielberg and friends, but with all the dark, though excellent, films he may have to do some serious soul-cleansing to give the elegant innocence of the Mary Poppins story. Then again, that may be why he's wanting to do it.

This should never ever happen. Even Steven Spielbergshould know you do not remake a classic. This is very wrong and a lot of Julie Andrews fans I know will find this very distressful news. The movie just celebrated its 40th Anniversary last year and it has wonderful things in its DVD.Let this Director do a documentary on it but not the whole story. You can not duplicate the chemistry between Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke and Walt Disney is gone and this is his masterpiece legacy. Please do not let it get tarnished.
