Spamalot Dominates Circle Awards
Comedy stage show MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT scooped the top honours at New York's OUTER CRITICS CIRCLE AWARDS on Sunday (08MAY05), including the Best Broadway Musical prize.
Former Python ERIC IDLE's theatre adaptation of the British troupe's classic 1975 film MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL, starring DAVID HYDE PIERCE, TIM CURRY and HANK AZARIA, opened to rave reviews in New York last month (MAR05).
And with a four-prize take at the prestigious ceremony, Idle's latest venture in the entertainment world has been confirmed a triumph. As well as the Best Broadway Music gong, the show also picked up awards for Best Musical Director (Mike Nichols), Best Featured Musical Actress (SARA RAMIREZ), and Best Costume Design (TIM HATLEY).
Elsewhere, DOUBT - JOHN PATRICK SHANLEY's drama centering on a combative nun's suspicions about a parish priest - was named Best Broadway Play.
NORBERT LEO BUTZ was named Best Musical Actor for his conniving turn in DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS and VICTORIA CLARK won the Best Musical Actress gong for her performance in THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA.
