Sir Elton Steps In To Help Soccer Team
British rock legend SIR ELTON JOHN will hold a one-off concert to help his favourite English soccer team buy back their stadium.
The singer, who quit as chairman of WATFORD FC two years ago (02), will perform on the pitch of the club's VICARAGE ROAD ground in Hertfordshire next June (05).
He has agreed to donate his fee and all profits to the Buy Back The Vic campaign, to help Watford - who narrowly avoided going into administration in 2002 - buy back the ground from their landlords.
Sir Elton - a lifelong Watford supporter - says, "I know that the club is still facing financial difficulties but I am confident that Watford will come through. The key is that the Vicarage Road ground must be owned by the club and I am delighted to help.
"I last performed at Vicarage Road in 1974 and it was a memorable occasion for me. I am really looking forward to this show next summer."
Watford FC chairman GRAHAM SIMPSON says, "This is absolutely fantastic news. It not only demonstrated Elton's continued affection for the club, but will give the Watford public a chance to see one of the greatest live performers in the world."30/06/2004 17:35
