Sag Snubs Stars' Game Contract

LATEST: A contract between actors including SAMUEL L JACKSON, DENNIS HOPPER and BURT REYNOLDS and the computer game business has been rejected by the SCREEN ACTORS GUILD (SAG).

Game producers agreed to give a 36 per cent pay rise to the actors, who provide voice-overs for the video games.

But although the deal was approved by the AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TELEVISION AND RADIO ARTISTS (AFTRA), the influential union SAG refused to agree to the terms.

AFTRA's deal states that the current minimum fee of $556 (GBP305) per four hour session will rise to $759 (GBP416) by 2008.

AFTRA president JOHN CONNOLLY sees it as "another important step in building artists' power in this growing sector of the media industry".

But many SAG members insist the SAG should wait until the video game industry, worth an estimated $10 billion (GBP5 billion), agreed to give royalties from every copy sold to the voice-over artist.
