THE KINKS frontman RAY DAVIES is sick of comparisons to 1960s contemporary SIR PAUL McCARTNEY, because they are nothing alike.
The pair were two of the biggest artists of the 1960s and are often lumped into the same musical category.
But Davies insists they have always made different music.
He says "There's never been a competitive edge. We're not even in the same world. We write about different things. He (McCartney) writes some brilliant songs, although some of them do make me laugh. I just wish he still had JOHN LENNON with him to bring him down to earth."

| Both Ray Davies and Paul McCartney have influenced me as a musician and human being in a real way for this lifetime. I certainly can't say that Ray's comment about not being compared to Paul isn't absolutely valid but still it's as Ray himself experiences it. The majority of Ray Davies writing is certainly what would be considered "down to earth" yet on a large number of songs I,at least, get the feeling of a much larger context than that phrase conveys. Just my opinion but Ray hits us on many levels obviously without trying or maybe even realizing.(Plus I think he's generally a little negative in how he feels about McCartney. But...it is how how he feels.) By the same token as Paul McCartney writes in a seemingly more stream of consciousness way or his lyrics seem secondary to his melodies I feel that he,similarly to Ray Davies, reveals a lot more of a "down to earth" set of beliefs than many of his songs seem to on the surface. The music of both is going to be here ALWAYS either way which is a great blessing for all of us listeners. Be Goode,KinksOneAllAndEverywhere | ||
