Quiz Show Host Recalls Beatles' Hollywood Shows In Memoirs
The host of top-rated THE NEWLYWED GAME was a local DJ when he saw the Fab Four on the ED SULLIVAN SHOW and he was inspired to do whatever he could to promote them in Hollywood.
He says, "Right then I decided I would find a way to book them and bring them to town."
Eubanks, who hosted club nights for young adults and booked acts like the Beach Boys and IKE AND TINA TURNER, managed to secure a $25,000 (GBP13,900) loan and set about booking the Hollywood Bowl as a venue.
Tickets for the April, 1964, show, which cost from $3 (GBP1.60) to $7 (GBP3.80), sold out four months in advance.
Eubanks reveals in his memoirs that the Beatles earned $58,000 (GBP32,200) for their 30 minute Hollywood Bowl set, while the ambitious promoter made $1,000 (GBP555.50) profit - and saved his home.
The Fab Four only performed another two shows in Los Angeles at the Bowl again in 1965 and at DODGERS STADIUM the following year (66).24/08/2004 02:45
