Producers Does Proud At Olivier Awards

Smash hit musical THE PRODUCERS has scooped three top prizes at the LAURENCE OLIVIER AWARDS, Britain's version of the TONY AWARDS.

The show, which has succesfully transferred from New York's Broadway to London's West End, won Best New Musical, NATHAN LANE won Best Actor In A Musical for his role as MAX BIALYSTOCK and CONLETH HILL won the Best Performance In A Supporting Role In A Musical.

Lane's award is in spite of his brief stint in the show. He stepped to help open the show in November (04) after RICHARD DREYFUSS pulled out, but was forced offstage in December (04) because of a back injury.

Other West End shows including GRAND HOTEL and a new production of MARY POPPINS were also winners. ALAN BENNETT play THE HISTORY BOYS took the pick of the drama awards, with three prizes, including Best New Play.
