PRINCE CHARLES has been warned he will face protests organised by animal rights activists People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for the duration of his eight-day official visit to the US.
The British royal, who touched down in New York City this afternoon (01NOV05) with new wife CAMILLA, DUCHESS OF CORNWALL, is being targetted by PETA over the use of bear skin to make the traditional hats worn by the Royal Guards who protect QUEEN ELIZABETH II at London's Buckingham Palace.
As part of their "Save My Skin" initiative, PETA activists have vowed to don bear costumes and wave placards - demanding a switch to fake fur - at every stop on Charles' itinerary which includes visits to New Orleans, Louisiana, and Washington DC.
PETA president INGRID NEWKIRK tells gossip website The Scoop, "Prince Charles is known to be a staunch defender of the environment, so it would make sense for him to oppose the slaughter of black bears for something as frivolous as a ceremonial hat.
"The Prince's wife, Camilla, has recently undergone a fashion make-over, and it's time for the Palace Guards to get one, too."
