Penguin Documentary Maker Suffered Frostbite In Antarctica

10 July 2005

The makers of a hit new penguin documentary almost died while tracking the flightless birds in Antarctica when they were stranded in freezing winds.

The March of the Penguins co-director JEROME MAISON still suffers from the frostbite he suffered while trying to stay alive in temperatures that were -100 degrees Fahrenheit (-73 degree Celsius) on average.

He recalls, "One day the wind took us by surprise when we were filming far away from where we were living so we had to stay 11 hours in temperatures from -68 to -158 and we got frostbitten.

"We were on the verge of exhaustion when a rescue team came to get us.

"I've lost the feeling in the fingertips of my right hand and I can no longer feel my right ear."

The suffering was worth it - March of The Penguins has become one of the sleeper hits of the summer (05) in America.
