Palmer's Lover Fights For His Fortune

Late rocker Robert Palmer's impoverished lover MARY AMBROSE is fighting for his $54 million (GBP30 million) fortune.

Ambrose had dated Palmer for 12 years until his tragic heart attack in Paris, France, 14 months ago (SEP03), which killed the ADDICTED TO LOVE singer and left his girlfriend in a financial and legal crisis.

Palmer allegedly removed his ex-wife SUE from his will and replaced her with Ambrose, but Switzerland - where Palmer was a tax exile - does not recognise 'common law wives' and is not expected to allow Ambrose access to his estate or future earnings from his back catalogue.

A family friend explains, "She may be forced to leave the house because she can't afford its upkeep. She is even out of pocket over the cost of Robert's funeral.

"Robert made a will years ago when he was living in the Bahamas when he was married, but later he crossed out his wife's name and wrote in Mary's. He had it all witnessed but for some reason the way he did it may not be acceptable in the Swiss courts."

I am Mary Ambrose's cousin and I thought it would be a good idea to write in to correct a few inaccuracies regarding this article and about my cousin in general. I have recently read a few articles making mention of Mary and her life and I was flabbergasted. To start with, Mary was not Robert Palmer's companion for twelve years prior to his death. Mary met Palmer in August of 1995. The entire family and I know this. The date was carved in stone in all of our memories. When Mary made Robert's acquaintance, she phoned each and every member of her family, everybody she had ever met, etc. to inform them of the auspicious meeting. She phoned me at 3:00 in the morning to tell me. That was the night that she had met Palmer. I was not the only person she knew getting woken from a sound sleep that night via phone calls from Mary. I don't exactly know what this article means by Robert Palmer removing his ex-wife Sue from the will and replacing her name with Mary's. If that is to infer that Mary was the Executrix of the Estate of Robert Palmer, then the information provided is incorrect. The Executor of the Estate was Palmer's son, James Palmer. I know this because Mary went on and on about how she felt that information could not be true. She insisted that Robert Palmer had told her that he had put her in position as the Executrix of the Estate. I don't know if he ever really told her this or not, because Mary has a laziez faire relationship with the truth when it suits her, but his will did indeed reflect that his son James was the Executor. As for the part of the article starting per a family friend that Mary might have to leave the house due to financial difficulties, that part is completely inaccurate. By the time that this article was written, Mary was no longer living at the Palmer Estate. It had been entered as part of the Estate to be sold, and was not left to Mary. Unfortunately I know this too, because Mary was legally compelled to exit the Estate so that the sale could proceed. Mary was no longer living in Switzerland by the writing of this article. To be perfectly blunt with you, the Palmer family had no use for Mary and dispensed with her as quickly as possible. After Mary sued the Estate in 2004 claiming to be the sole inheritor, she could not prove her case. There was no written documentation of any kind to support this allegation and there were no witnesses to back up her story. She did not prevail. She appealed the court's decision. The appeal was dismissed. And in 2007, she filed a third suit against the Estate. Once again, Mary's suit was decided against. She had lost for a third time. She was also advised in 2007 that her rights to further sue the Estate were extinguished. She had no further options. She received an extraordinarily small inheritance from the Estate. But even though I have known Mary all my life, I have to say that if those were the wishes of Robert Palmer, then I feel like they should have been respected as they were. Beyond these corrections, I have read articles about Mary that are fabricated entirely. I have read in several articles that Mary was Robert Palmer's companion for twenty years preceding his death. In 1983, Mary was six years old. I was raised with the woman. I am two years her senior. Mary started publicly dating Robert Palmer in 2000, although she was social with him from 1995 forwards. I remember in 1999 when Robert Palmer and Susan Palmer divorced how excited Mary was. When she started working for him and dating him, she assured me that she would be married to him by the end of the year. I did not hold my breadth. Me and the entire family knew that Robert Palmer was what Mary's mom, my Aunt Linda, used to call a bounder. Wherever there were women, you would find Robert Palmer. He was like a kid in a candy shop where it came to sex. Mary never understood this and initially thought she could change him. He never stopped dating while Mary lived in his home, but to be honest with you, he did provide her with her own private quarters, which amounted to a regular sized apartment. I know because I visited her there. Palmer had two homes by the time Mary had taken up residence with him, one in Switzerland and one in Del Mar, California. Mary eventually understood that Palmer had no intentions of marrying her and she started to date once again, as she had done prior to moving into his home. She fell in love with Robert Palmer's manager, and she had a child in 2001 with him. She asked him to divorce his wife for her, but he would not do so. She started an affair with a doctor who was a friend of Robert Palmer's who was a Swiss national, and they had a child together in 2002. He was also married though, and did not leave his wife. And Mary did date many others, most of them friends of Robert Palmers'. It always made Mary furious that Robert did not get jealous over these situations. But he was always involved with others, and even had a steady girlfriend the entire time that Mary resided with him. Another thing that was misreported about Mary was that she was thirty-six years old at the time of Palmer's death. Mary was twenty-six years old. I read one fabricated article where Mary was referring to herself in the third person as Mary Francis. Mary Francis? Try Mary Catherine, because that is Mary's middle name. This same author wrote that Robert Palmer had met Mary in San Francisco, while she was living there in a townhouse with her sisters and working as waitress in the early nineties. Sorry, but no. Mary never lived in San Francisco in the early nineties, because she was living with her family in Coronado, California and was in fact a teenager. Also, Mary only has one brother, and no sisters. Her brothers name is Michael. And, Mary met Robert Palmer at a party in Coronado, to be exact. There was a room full of witnesses to vouch for this, as well as her friends and family. In the same fabricated article Mary is quoted as saying that she likes being Auntie Mary to her may nieces and nephews. Mary had no nieces or nephews at the time. Her brother eventually married and had two children, but he had no children at the time. Michael is now raising Mary's three children. She had a third child, my niece, in 2008. The rumor that Mary had died was false, but as I understood it was started by those that were close to Mary, so their testimony was considered credible by many people. They later said they had their reasons for doing this, but in my book there is no reason to do any such thing. Also, the same writer that stated so many untruths about Mary also said that she was born and raised in Ohio. Mary was born and raised in San Diego, California. I then read articles saying that Mary was in Paris, France with Robert Palmer when he died, vacationing with him. Absolutely not. Mary called me and her brother from Lugano, Switzerland, to tell us that Robert had died. By that time, their relationship had grown rocky and Mary was seeking new employment. She was no longer dating Robert by then, and was honestly distraught over the situation, but Palmer had definitely ended their personal relationship before he died. When I started seeing articles saying she was Robert's long time companion and so forth, I asked her what was going on. That was never how the family had seen the situation. They and myself had just viewed Robert Palmer as one of the men that Mary was dating, but we never saw it as exclusive. I pointed out to her that she was not even dating Robert before he died, and she denied saying that. She told me he was always the only one, and that she dated no others once they got together. I then asked her how she could have had two children while living with him if she had not been dating others. She became furious and hung up on me. It is a matter of public record that Robert Palmer had a vasectomy in 1982, so the children were not Palmer's. She even named the fathers to her family, and I met her first son's father personally. I know a lot of people will think that I am a jerk for writing this, but under the circumstances, me and Michael thought it was time to clear the record and put out the correct information. The fabricated articles created to favor Mary did not help her move-on with her life. She kept thinking that her connection to Robert Palmer was going to make her wealthy and to that end she tried plot after plot, trying to trade on Palmer's name. It did not work. Her attempt to use her Robert Palmer connection actually got her into trouble, rather than helping her. She just could not accept that life was going to be normal after Robert Palmer's death, and that she was going to have to get a real job to support herself and her children. Her mother even left her her house in Coronado when she passed away, because she knew that Mary was incapable of supporting herself and her children. She wanted her grandchildren to have a nice place to live. Mary lost the house to bad investments. Mary's father, my Uncle Mike, had passed away in 2008. All Mary's family can hope for now is that Mary gets back on track and into the real world. She does have her children to think about, and at thirity-four years of age it is about time that she grows-up.

Hello. I was Robert Palmer's neighbor and friend. I met Robert Palmer in Del Mar, California where he routinely maintained a second residence. Robert enjoyed Southern California. I did read your article on Mary Ambrose and her battles with the Estate of Robert Palmer. I met Mary and I know she could not have been Robert's companion for twelve years. Mary was a young woman and was twenty-six years old at the time of Robert's death. Also, Robert's marriage to Susan Palmer was dissolved in 1999, not 1993. As far as I knew, at the time of Robert's death his girlfriend was Geraldine Edwards. He had been dating her since 1999 after his divorce from Susan. He had known Geraldine since the mid seventies and they were very close. Robert did announce Geraldine as his girlfriend on Access Hollywood in 2003. Apparently, Mick Carter, Robert's manager, misreported Mary Ambrose as Robert's girlfriend at the time of his death and was later legally stopped from doing so by the Palmer family. Mary did date Robert from 2000 until his death but she was not considered his girlfriend. Mary did bring a lawsuit against the Estate of Robert Palmer for the full amount of the estate as reported, naming will tampering. Unfortunately for Mary the case was dismissed by the court for lack of evidence in 2004. The case simply was not regarded as meritorious. There is a comment about Mary potentially losing her home in Lugano due to financial constraints. Mary never inherited the house in the first place. The house was definintly sold as part of the Estate of Robert Palmer and it's assets were duely distrubuted to Robert's five children. Thank you.

I am a local writer in San Diego, California and I was a friend of Robert Palmer's since 1979. Mary Ambrose was not Robert's companion for twelve years at the time of his death, because Mary was only twenty-six years old in 2003. Mary did start dating Robert in 2000 and dated him until his death. Mary also worked for Robert as his Household Head of Staff and Personal Assistant from 2000 to 2003. Robert and Mary met in late 1995 when Mary had just turned eighteen at a mutual friends home in San Diego, California. They did not date though, until 2000. Robert was not divorced from Susan Palmer in 1993. They divorced in 1999. Robert started to date Geraldine Edwards after his divorce and she was considered his girlfriend at the time of his death. Robert and Geraldine had known each other since 1976. She was the woman Almost Famous was based on. She also dated Eric Clapton. No one is disputing that Robert dated Mary because he did. When Robert died Mick Carter announced Mary as Robert's live-in girlfriend. He was contacted by legal counsel representing the Palmer family ordering him to stop this practice. Mary was also contacted by legal counsel advising her to stop announcing herself as Robert's live-in girlfriend. The Palmer family recognised her as Robert's live-in employee as did the court. When Mary launced her lawsuit against the Estate of Robert Palmer it was based on will tampering. In mid-2004 the matter was dismissed by the court as without merit. I am afraid Swiss law had nothing to do with the final decision, because the matter was ajudicated by the French Courts. A case may not be tried in two separate venues. And there is some confusion about Mary inheriting the Lugano mansion. In fact, Mary did not inherit the Lugano mansion. It was sold as part of the Estate of Robert Palmer and the proceeds were distributed among Robert's five children from two marriages.

My husband and I met Robert Palmer socially in 1981. We remained friends with him until his death. Unfortunately, there are some errors in your article. Mary was not Robert's companion for twelve years. Mary was only twenty-six years old at the time of Roberts death. Robert was not divorced from Susan Palmer in 1993. He was divorced from her in 1999. Robert did have a girlfriend at the time of his death by the name of Geraldine Edwards. Geraldine was the woman Almost Famous was written about. Robert and Geraldine were dating since Robert's divorce in 1999 and had known each other since 1976. Robert did date Mary Ambrose from 2000 to 2003. Mary did work for Robert as his live-in housekeeper and personal assistant from 2000 to 2003 as well. She was twenty-three at the time. Robert met Mary in 1995 at a mutual friend's home in Coronado, California and they remained platonic friends until 2000. In regards to the final outcome of Mary's battle with the Estate of Robert Palmer Mary did not prevail. Her case was dismissed by the French Courts as groundless and without merit in mid-2004. I am afraid the Swiss Courts had no say in the matter whatsoever, and the matter was strictly ajudicated by the French Courts. Thank you.

I read your article on Mary Ambrose. I knew Robert since the seventies when I met him in Greenwich. I also knew Mary Ambrose, although I would definitly not call her a friend. Mary moved in to Robert's home in 2000 as his housekeeper and personal assistant. I am not joking. Mary managed Robert's household staff for his two homes in Lugano, Switzerland and Del Mar, California. Robert sold his Del Mar home in late 2002 and was looking for a house in the Los Angeles area near the time of his death. Robert did know Mary platonically since 1995 when Mary was eighteen years old, but he did not date her until 2000 when Mary was twenty three years old. Mary was interested in dating Robert as soon as she met him, but he just was not interested in her at the time. He was still very publicly married to Susan Palmer. Robert and Susan did get divorced in 1999. Mick Carter had misreported their divorce date as 1993 and the error carried. After Robert's divorce from Susan he started dating Geraldine Edwards his long time friend. They had known each other since 1976 and had many mutual friends in common. The movie Almost Famous was based on Geraldine's teenage misadventures. Geraldine did know that Robert did date from time to time and she did not hassle him about it. She was not that type of person. When she found out about Mary, she started referring to her as "Robert's andropausal adventure." Even Robert had to laugh at this. When Robert died the trouble started. Mick Carter, who had had a child with Mary in 2001, felt free to announce Mary as Robert's companion at the time of his death vacationing with him in Paris. That was not true. Mary was not vacationing with Robert in Paris at the time of his death, Jack Bruce was. They both enjoyed Paris and were taking some time off. Mary Ambrose was not Robert's girlfriend, Geraldine Edwards was. Mick Carter was legally censured and prohibited from futher announcing Mary Ambrose as Robert's companion. Mary was similarly censured legally. She was also legally prohibited from writing a book about Robert Palmer. The next problem arose when Mary thought that she was the Executrix of the Estate of Robert Palmer. She arrived dramatically at Robert's Paris law offices and caused a scene wanting to speak with Robert's attorney. She announced grandly that she was the "Executrix" of the estate. She was informed by Attorney Bernard that Mr. James Palmer, Robert's son, was the Executor of the estate. This was when Mary started to become confused. Attorney Bernard gave her the date and time to return to the offices for the reading of the Will. Mary discovered that she had inherited under $20,000.00. That registered with her and she partially exited her dream world. But only partially. She now had imagined that she had been given Robert's Lake Lugano mansion. She told one and all that he had signed it over to her in his lifetime. I am afraid not. It was part of the Estate and was to be sold as such. There was a serious problem getting Mary to leave the house with her two sons. She was in serious financial straights, and the fathers of the children, of which there were two, were not helping her financially. Eventually she was able to borrow enough money to move to London, England. There, she lauched the law suit against the Estate of Robert Palmer, proposing a far fetched and preposterous story about a second Will being written. No second Will was ever written or filed with any court extant. She also promised that she could provide witnesses to the signing of the second Will. When the "witnesses" were contacted they told the court that they knew nothing about the matter, period. The case was dismissed as "groundless and without merit." Mary was really furious by this point. She had called numerous people telling them that she was going to get and I quote "all of Robert's money." I am serious. She never grieved over Robert's death, the only thing she could think of was how soon she would be in receipt of his money. She called his girlfriend Geraldine and told her that "when she got Robert's money, which he owed her, she would give her some." Geraldine was disgusted and hung up on Ambrose. As was right and proper the Estate, including the house and Robert's back earnings, did go to his five children from his two marriages to Shelley Palmer and Susan Palmer. I was informed by John Agostino in mid 2005 that Mary Ambrose had died in London, England. He was a friend of Mary's and Robert's. He told me that her parents who lived in San Diego, California had her body flown back to the States and had her intered in San Diego. I spoke with Geraldine recently, about a month ago. She was laughing because although she has been married for four years now people that she knew prior to being married still insist on calling her by her maiden name, confusing people. For the record her name is Geraldine Flemming-Mueller. She said that this drives her husband Tony insane. You can imagine. She still hears from some of the old group, but as she said everybody has moved on except Mick Carter who still manages to live in the past. His glory days were over when Robert Palmer died.
