Oscar Nominations Honour Lord Of The Rings And Lost In Translation

The 76th ACADEMY AWARDS look set to be dominated by THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING and LOST IN TRANSLATION after the nominations were announced today (27JAN04).

The two films both got nods in the Best Film and Best Director categories, and featured heavily in other shortlists with eleven nods for the PETER JACKSON-directed epic and four major nominations for SOFIA COPPOLA's romantic comedy.

Other contenders for the Best Film include MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD, MYSTIC RIVER and SEABISCUIT.

In the Best Actor category, Master and Commander star RUSSELL CROWE will battle it out with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL star JOHNNY DEPP, Lost In Translation's BILL MURRAY, MYSTIC RIVER's SEAN PENN, HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG star BEN KINGSLEY and COLD MOUNTAIN's JUDE LAW.

The ANTHONY MINGHELLA-directed romantic epic was largely snubbed in the major categories however, having been left off the Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay shortlists. Favoured NICOLE KIDMAN did not receive a Best Actress nomination.

Instead, SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE star DIANE KEATON will go up against MONSTER star CHARLIZE THERON, 21 GRAMS's NAOMI WATTS, IN AMERICA star SAMANTHA MORTON and WHALERIDER actress KEISHA CASTLE-HUGHES, who is the youngest actress ever to be nominated in the category at the age 13.

The glitzy ceremony will take place on 29 February (04) at the Los Angeles KODAK THEATER.
