Ono Gives Peace A Chance

Japanese artist YOKO ONO is continuing the pacifist campaign she started with her late husband JOHN LENNON - by serving as an honorary chairwoman of an art competition and exhibition for the 100th anniversary of the treaty that ended the Russo-Japanese War.

Ono will be unable to attend The Art of Peace exhibition at Portsmouth, New Hampshire's Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery, but organisers hope she will inspire other artists to submit their work into the contest.

Ono explains, "The Portsmouth peace treaty is a very important and enduring symbol of peace that is worthy of honouring and celebrating with this visual arts competition and exhibition."

The chairman of the exhibition, ROBERT THORESEN, adds, "I don't believe (Ono's) schedule will allow her to be in Portsmouth, but she has agreed to lend her name to the contest because it's an area she is interested in."

"We also hope her name will generate interest among artists who want to submit their work."
