Newman Fights Princeton Booze Binge
Movie veteran PAUL NEWMAN is urging officials at PRINCETON UNIVERSITY to rethink a traditional beer marathon that bears his name.
The drinking binge, during which students at the New Jersey institution down a beer an hour for 24 hours, was named after a quote made famous by the actor in 1967 film COOL HAND LUKE: "24 beers in a case, 24 hours in a day. Coincidence? I think not."
Hearing of NEWMAN'S DAY, which takes place this year on 24 April (04), prompted Newman's attorney LEO NEVAS to send the university a letter, calling for the annual event to stop.
Nevas writes, "Mr Newman is disturbed by the use of his name in conjunction with this alcohol-related event, and he would like to bring an end to this tradition."
University bosses have responded, explaining they do not sanction the event.23/04/2004 09:29
