Newman And Redford Screen Swan Song Imminent

Ageing screen icons PAUL NEWMAN and ROBERT REDFORD have confirmed they are determined to reunite in a screen version of BILL BRYSON's novel A WALK IN THE WOODS.

Newman, 80, recently voiced his reluctance to retire - but he believes he's now found his perfect swan song with his BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID and THE STING co-star Redford.

He says, "I hate to talk about anything until the papers are drawn up but we've been looking for something like 20 years and now we are looking harder.

"I want to make one final film for good luck and I would like it to be with Bob."

Redford, 67, a fan of travel writer Bryson, is busy negotiating the rights to adapt the adventure book - which focuses on an intrepid pair of friends who brave a hike along the Appalachian Trail.

Redford quips, "That might be something for Paul Newman and me, if we're not too old.

"That's if Paul can hang on long enough and we can get him along the Appalachian Trail before he gets into a wheelchair."
