Morello's Terror Flight
AUDIOSLAVE star TOM MORELLO may appear to be one of rock's hardest guitarists - but he was reduced to screaming wreck on board a flight to Auckland, New Zealand.
The heavy rocker - currently preparing for this summer's (03) LOLLAPALOOZA festival across America - was left in a state of shock when he learnt the plane had to be turned around because of an unidentified burning smell.
He recalls, "I am never afraid to fly. But this flight? Terrified. We are an hour-and-a-half over the dark Pacific Ocean, and it's 1:30 in the morning.
"Everybody's sleeping. Los Angeles to Auckland. I'm the only one awake. The flight attendant comes up to me and says, 'Um, I don't know if you noticed, but we're turning the plane around and landing back in LA because there's an unidentified burning smell.'
"She says this very peacefully, and walks off. I'm thinking, 'Am I in a TWILIGHT ZONE episode?' I managed to not do too much screaming, and we did make it back safely. But that was sort of the most dramatic spike my life's taken recently."29/05/2003 21:08
