Meirelles Attacks Us Foreign Policy
Brazilian film-maker FERNANDO MEIRELLES is using forthcoming movie THE CONSTANT GARDENER to draw attention to America's monopoly on pharmaceutical products in his home country - and he is determined to have revenge.
The big screen adaptation of JOHN LE CARRE's novel focuses on how western companies secretly tested new drugs in Africa, and the CITY OF GOD film-maker is furious that US companies refuse to allow their pharmaceuticals to be made affordable for poor Brazilians.
He says, "Le Carre based the story on real life. It's set mostly in Kenya, but based on something that happened in Nigeria. And it's personal for me.
"The US is trying to stop my country, Brazil, from producing cheap generic drugs for people. So this is my revenge, my personal revenge."
