Mayer Forbade Family Life For Turner

Hollywood mogul LOUIS B MAYER was so controlling over his protege's lives, he banned LANA TURNER from having a child with her husband ARTIE SHAW.

Within weeks of their 1940 wedding, Mayer arrived at the screen beauty's home and demanded to know whether the newlyweds were planning a family.

When Turner's jazz star husband admitted he was not taking precautions, the movie boss insisted impending family life would ruin Turner's career and his investment.

But although Shaw rubbished Mayer's protestations, Turner heeded the warning and secretly aborted her subsequent unborn child.

Mayer told Shaw, "It would be disastrous if she had a child. She's a love goddess, and love goddesses don't have children."
